"Yeah, really."
Kida barely avoided being trampled by a few cooks in Japanese dress that were in way too much of a hurry. In fact, everyone was. She thought back to how many customers had been in the dinning area and she could see why. Kida had been lucky to get a table earlier. "Just one second." Running back out to her table she pulled out a few bills and placed them half way under her plate. No dine and dash for her.
Cautiously going back into the kitchen, as she was almost smashed between the wall and the door by people who looked very happy to be off shift. Jeez...What did I get myself into? Without time to contemplate she continued to look for the manager. She couldn't miss him, huh? Well in that case he must be--Kida blinked as her gaze rested on a deliriously happy man within the chaos.
Guess that's him. Slipping and sliding her way through the commotion Kida got to the manager and quickly gave him a run down of the situation, pleading for a job at least for the night. His response was an even bigger grin and to slap a small pile of stuff into her hands.
Gloves, apron and a hairband? Hired at last. With apron donned and messy bun made Kida snapped her gloves into place and found Zephel. "Tell me what to do."

Zeph was left dumbfounded in the chaos of the kitchen as soon as Kida slipped off back to the front of the restaurant. It took him a while to register what she said before she left as he just stood there, blankly, then got yanked by some chefs to help them boil some salmon. Right after he's done doing that, another chef pulled him by the arm, speaking something in Japanese while pointing at a pot of cooked vegetables, then dissappeared.
Zeph sighed, picks up a sort of long cooking tool he's not familliar with, then poked the vegetables. He shrugged, lessens the fire of the stove, at a random amount of salt, taste the soup there, add more salt, and left the area to head for his REAL destination; the snacks table.
As he's on his way, he found a suit-up Kida asking him what to do. His real line is supposed to be something in the lines of 'Pick a chef. Any chef.' but his tired state forbids him to even show the simplest effect of sarcasm. "Follow me." He said, dragging himself to the corner of the kitchen into a rather small area with sweet smell lingering around.
"Kida. Furukawa-san. Furukawa-san, Kida." He introduced his mentor without any trace of enthusiasm as the large man eyed Kida from head to toe, his face fierce and solem. Actually, it sort of looked comedic for such a frightening man to work in the sweets and snacks corner. Zeph didn't seem to mind to bow to his mentor though, and just drags his feet to the main table there, founding a mass of circular small white balls there on the counter inside several bowls. "...Let me guess. Dango night?"
Furukawa nodded, gesturing Kida to join Zeph. The silver-haired slips on his glove, remembering one of them is useless, and grabbed a spare one from one of the boxes nearby. "Okay, Kida. Dango's pretty easy." He started dryly, picking up one tiny ball from the bowl there which Furukawa-san might have started on when Zeph's on his break. "It's sort of like a Japanese dumpling, I think. Made from rice flour."
When explaining, he took out a plastic filled with sticks, picked one of the long thin implement and simply thrust the white ball with it, pulling the dango down. Picking another ball of dango, Zeph did the same thing on the same stick, continuing on it till 4 of the balls are on top of each other, with the stick as its support.
"They're often served in skewers like this. So we just have to make about 3 dozens of it, help Furukawa-san roast it, and we're set." He explained, putting down the skewered dango at the side of the table where his mentor is standing, and the large man picks it up and puts it on the extremely wide grill.
"That's all to it on dango. Easy." He faced to Kida with a shrug.(Just for reference, dango looks like this: )

Her brows hit her hairline. That was it, really? "Tell me about it." Adjusting her gloves Kida stepped up to the table and surveyed all of the instruments she would need. She grabbed a few skewers and began to line up the dumplings on them as a steady little tempo.
But the chef, Furukawa, grunted. Apparently she wasn't going fast enough. So she quickly picked up the pace with ferocity. No one would be able to say she didn't pull her own weight at any job, no matter how small it was. "After we roast these do we just make more?"
If she just had to do this the whole time then it would be fine. A little monotonous and boring, but fine.

Zeph shrugged, continuously thrusting the white balls into the skewers and place it near Furukawa, who them picks up all the skewers there and put it on the grill. "Not exactly. After we roast these, Furukawa will give out orders on what snack will be next...depends on the orders. Can you work full-time or part-time?" He asked, eyes staring sharply at how his hands just swiftly moved to the rhythm of the dango-making.
A figure suddenly strides his way beside the table Zeph and Kida are working on, smiling wide with that kindly expression on his face. Zeph didn't even need to look up to know that's the manager...since he's the only man in this kitchen that bears this pleasant aura. The manager nodded at them, but mainly to Kida since she's new in this. "Kida-san, can you cook?"

No, not this question...! "Uh...Sort of." As long as the people eating the food didn't have high expectations. "But nothing too fancy..." Kida was tempted to scratch the back of her head in nervousness, but didn't dare to ruin her gloves.
"What did you have in mind?" Please be something easy, please be something easy!

The manager just chuckled at her, then shook his head slightly. "Oh, nothing, nothing. I just assumed you would like working with gentle mister Yamamoto-san over there than our coldest chef in the kitchen..." He pointed at the busy kitchen, one of the men there have his attention to the group in the snacks corner, probably Yamamoto. Said 'gentle' chef waved kindly to Kida, until some cleaning guy accidentally hit his face with the back of his mop... That mistake made, Yamamoto suddenly burst into wild rage, strangling the poor cleaner boy savagely.
"But it seems like you're doing fine here." The manager nodded to the girl, then walks off contently.
"You're good with expressing emotions through your tone of voice." Zeph shrugged, not really meaning that as a compliment or an offensive statement. Just his honesty acting up again...with sarcasm, of course. "If you don't possess that sort of gift, the manager would pair you up with mister 'gentle' there."
He cocked his head to Yamamoto's direction, who's currently busy being pulled away from the poor choking boy. Zeph tossed the skewered dango to the side, with Furukawa catching it on time before placing it on the grill, grumbling something in Japanese.
"It's your choice on which chef to choose, really. So...again, pick a chef. Any chef."

"Err...Thanks." Not that it sounded very complimenting, but she'd deal with that. "Arn't we technically taken by Mr. Sunshine here already?" she asked in reference to Furukawa. She assumed either he didn't speak English, wouldn't care about her statement or would have a similar reaction to the "Gentle" Chef. Any of them she could deal with.

Zeph sort of snickered at that, though his eyes are focused on the motions of his hands. Furukawa slowly twists his head to the teenagers' general direction, grunted, then gets back with his roasting. Dango is more important than writhing a the youth, it seems.
"Technically yes. But since the manager believes we have 'hidden' talents, he's eager to unlock and nourish those...thus placing us in different fields of cooking and crap." The silver-haired finished the last dango in first bowl of dango there, so he reached out to grab the second dango-filled bowl and drag it near him and Kida. "I already went through the trial of torment, so now I'm permanently placed here. You, on the other hand..."
He paused his words, having a minor trouble with one of the skewers, then after settling that, continue with his usual pace. "...Will have to do the try-out either tonight or tomorrow. Why, I'm betting the manager's mentioning you to the chefs one by one right at this moment."

"Oh God..." Damnit! Couldn't she loose her job tomorrow?! Why did it have to get mucked up so soon. Bah! Though technically she didn't really have the job yet, it was nice to entertain the fantasy. From now on she'd have to look for a job in places that didn't sell food. Kida could do much better in other work, she was sure. Waitressing was just a starting point really, and though it didn't include actually making the food everyone seemed to think she could do both.
Kida looked around the kitchen, trying to find the manager and whoever he was talking to. "Why do I get the feeling...that this is going to end up like my last job 'trial'...." Her gaze snapped to the sprinkler system in the ceiling. And she'd just managed to get her clothes dry...Sigh.

"Don't worry." Zeph said, in a surprisingly gentler tone than his usual flat-toned one. "I heard there's this pizza place a few blocks away that was blown up to pieces because of the waitress there. That's the worst of what can happen during your trial. If you managed to live throught it without exploding the place, and you're no good with any of it, then you either will end up here or outside serving food."
With a shrug, Zeph tossed a couple more dango-filled skewers to Furukawa's direction, who skillfully caught all of them with one large hand of his. "Ze-fe-ru!" The large man suddenly growled, annoyed by the Zeph's constant food-throwing, and is actually the first time he really spoke in front of Kida. The silver-haired stopped thrusting the dango to the skewer he's currently holding, taking his time to shot Furukawa a bored look. "Gomen."
Then, he continues his work, mumbling. "Sheesh...just trying not to make things TOO tedious..."

"Eheheheh..." Well at least she knew she couldn't blow the building up. Set it on fire at worst, but she could always put it out.
She jumped almost violently when she heard the old chef speak for the first time. In fact she wondered if he was mute. Kida's gaze went to the man, a little nervous. Gorilla man... she insulted him in her head. Glancing back to Zephel she asked, "Zeferu?" A nickname maybe? She continued skewering the dango as fast and efficiently as she could so that Furukawa hopefully wouldn't bug them again.

"I don't know, all the Japanese people here called me that." Zeph shrugged, finishing half of the bowl of dango. "Guess they pronounce the 'l' in my name as 'r'. Instead of Zephel, they said 'Zeferu'. Maybe it's their tongue." Grabbing another skewer, Zeph snickered again, lowering his voice down. "Gorilla man?" With an arched brow, the silver-haired turned to face Kida. "That has got to be the most suited nickname ever for him."
With Furukawa's rather bushy eyebrows and those thick sideburn, plus the large arms, he does sort of seem like one. Now seeing the close match, Zeph sniggered again, almost finishing the second bowl now. "Hey gori-- Furukawa-san." He shook his head slightly to get that insult off of his tongue. "After we're done with the third bowl, what are we making next?"
"Uiro."
"...Oh, goodie."[/color]

Kida snickered. "Glad you like it..." she said, referring to the nickname. Furukawa more than resembled one, but seemed to act like it too. She had to bite her tongue to not laugh out loud when Zephel almost called him Gorilla.
"Wait... What's Uiro?" From the way he had responded it obviously wasn't anything good. "Lemme guess...It's not a good thing."

"No, no, uiro is actually a popular delicacy in this restaurant. It's just..." Zeph looked towards Furukawa, who then returns the boy's stare with his glare, almost seeming like a deadly warning of something. "Let's just say I have a bad first experience on making that sort of snack." He said, turning to Kida slightly, then back to his dango work. "Hopefully, you're better at making it than I do, because I do not like making uiro...at all."
When Zeph realized the third bowl of dango is almost empty already, the silver-haired left the table for Kida to finish it and went towards the grill beside Furukawa, assisting him on turning over the skewered dango and applying a sort of oily substance with a brush on the snack.

"Ack." she quickly tried to hurry and finish what was left in the bowl and ready them for Furukawa. She almost jogged after Zephel. Kida watched how he roasted the dango and followed his example.
"So...is it just that this Uiro is hard to make? Or..." That was all she could come up with. She hoped to god it wasn't really that hard or else she wouldn't be able to cook it. That would be bad for her.
